Founding the company in 2006 with a ¾-ton Ford, Christopher J. Groves made his first official appearance as an independent service tech on Grey Wolf rig 13 in Shreveport, LA. One job led to another and then another, and Groves Intl soon gained the trust and respect of several drilling superintendents, some of whom Christopher still enjoys a good friendship with to this day.
Christopher J. Groves would make the Barnett Shale his second home. The amount of activity was every mechanic’s dream. A lot of the 40–50-year-old mechanical rigs were a great learning experience. Compounds, tail pumps. Those rigs are long gone and have been decommissioned in favor of newer iron. But the fact of the matter is a drilling rig will always perform to the same principles it was originally designed for back when they first went to a cantilever mast from a wooden derrick.
You will still have mud pumps and drawworks; they just may be newer with a prettier coat of paint. Regardless of how it’s powered—AC, diesel electric, mechanical or gear box driven—Groves Intl can repair it. Located in Houston, TX, Groves Intl is available 24/7, 365, fully equipped for the field and capable of complete refurbishments.
